The Dalles, Oregon
The
Dalles City Park is located in (where else?) The Dalles, Oregon. While it is
a small park, approximately half a city block in size, it is considered by many
to be the end of the old Oregon Trail. A marker dedicated by pioneer Ezra Meeker
denotes that fact.
Some people erroneously believe the End of the Oregon Trail is in Oregon City, Oregon. Not so! The Dalles was officially the jumping off spot for people who were seeking a new life in Oregon. The common wisdom of the area says that the ones who were looking for the end of the Oregon Trail stayed in The Dalles, and the ones who couldn't read went on to Portland.
The park has a play structure for children, and houses the old Victor Trevitt house, which was moved to the park a few years ago with the intention of housing a children's museum, "Wonderworks." The museum project was derailed when it was discovered the old house contained lead-based paint, and the cost to remove the paint in preparation for making it a children's museum was prohibitive. It now sits, unused, and Wonderworks museum is now closed.
The
park also hosts the Tucker Sherman Memorial Rose Garden. Little Tucker
Sherman was a five-year old boy who was a victim of child abuse, murdered by
his stepfather. The criminal case attracted a lot of attention, and the complete
failure of the system to provide this little boy from death was appalling. The
boy's stepfather was convicted of his murder, and his mother was found guilty
of failing to protect him. Both are serving time in prison. The Tucker Sherman
Memorial Rose Garden was created to remind the community that children are precious,
like beautiful roses, and to urge everyone to take an active role in preventing
Child Abuse.
