Interpretation Services Available

What is public health?
We promote the physical, social and emotional health and well being of the public, and assist in preventing unnecessary disease, disability, and premature death.

Who do we serve?
We serve all community members, of all financial situations of Wasco and Sherman County.

How much does it cost?
Many of our services are covered by private insurance and Oregon Health Plan. With the help of grants, donations and public funding, we're also able to provide some services on a sliding fee scale. To provide programs and services at the lowest possible cost, donations are welcomed. Environmental Health services require State fees.

We have several departments to serve you:

I. Parent & Child Health
Located on the 1st Floor of Annex A

• Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
  WIC is a nutrition education program to provide support to young families during critical periods of growth and development. The program provides assessment, nutrition and health education and counseling, supplemental food vouchers, referrals and support to families.

• Family Planning
  Birth Control information and services are available at no cost for elegible males and females aged 10-52. Program services include physical exams, follow-up and health education. Exams are by appointment. Personal, confidential counseling and method instruction are provided. Low cost Contraceptive methods offered at the Health Department include Birth Control Pills, Depo Provera Injections, Diaphragms, IUD's (Intrauterine Devices), Spermicides and Condoms. Emergency contraception is also available.

• Pregnancy Testing
  Drop-in testing times are available Monday - Thursday 8:30 - 5:00 p.m. Counseling and referral are provided by Registered Nurses and include information regarding parenting, prenatal care, abortion, and adoption services.
• Teen Health
  Services are completely confidential. No minimum age. Parental permission not required (...but is strongly encouraged).
  Birth Control and Wellness Exams. All methods of birth control are available during our walk in clinic hours.
• Jail Health
  The Wasco Sherman Health Department provides health care to the inmates housed at the local jail (NORCOR) and the Juvenile Detention Center. Under the direction of under direction of a Medical Health Officer, highly qualified nurse practitioners and registered nurses provide health services on site.
• Health Information and Referral
  Providing health information and referrals are a core public health function. We can help you access needed primary care services.We have applications for the Oregon Health Plan in our office. We have a Resource Room full of pamphlets and books, statistics, posters and more for you to access.
  

II. Communicable Disease

Mandatory reporting of communicable diseases is critical to the health and safety of all people in Wasco-Sherman County. All communicable diseases must be investigated thoroughly to prevent the spread of disease.

• Immunizations
  Some communicable diseases are preventable through immunizations (shots) and we are actively working toward full protection for all adults and children in Wasco-Sherman County by offering education and immunization services in our community. We offer low cost immunizations ($10.00 per shot). However, no one is denied vaccinations due to the inability to pay.

  Immunization Clinics are held at the Health Dept.
  Every Friday 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.
  The last Thursday of the Month 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
  Every other month, outreach clinics are held in Maupin and Moro.

  Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule

  If you're an Oregon resident and you'd like to check the status of your child's immunizations, contact the statewide registry, Oregon Immunization ALERT. Call (800) 980-9431.
• For information on any vaccines you may need for traveling, call the Health Department.
  
  
• Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Clinic
  We offer both testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases for men and women of all ages. Each client will receive an examination and treatment by a Nurse Practitioner and will answer all your questions and help you prevent further infections and/or passing the infection on to others. We will also see and treat any partners you may have. All information is confidential.

• Incidence of Tuberculosis has been steadily rising in the United States for the past decade, making the Health Department's role in identification and follow-up even more important. We offer TB skin testing on a walk-in basis. The test is very simple and takes only 5 minutes. After 2-3 days you will return to the clinic to have the skin test looked at and interpreted by a nurse. You should be tested if you know you have been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with TB, are experiencing a cough, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or fever you may want to get tested.

• Public Water Systems
  Provides sampling, monitoring and technical assistance to public water systems.
  Technical assistance for private water systems.
  Water borne disease investigation.
  This EPA site allows you to locate your drinking water supplier and view its violations and enforcements in the last 10 years.

• For information on domestic well testing for real estate transactions such as FAQs, reporting forms, fact sheets, check out this site.
  

• Food Service
  License and inspect restaurants and other public food service facilities.
  Restaurant building or renovation plan review.
  Education and issuing of food handler permits for restaurant staff.
  Food borne disease investigation.
  Temporary & Benevolant Restaurants.
