The City of Wasco is located just east of Highway 97 in Sherman County. The city was established in 1870, and incorporated 1898.

The City of Wasco is a small, rural town. The 2000 census listed the population of Wasco at 380 people. This is down from 420 people in 1998. Wasco's elevation is 1270 feet.

The major local industry is farming. Sherman County is an agricultural county with no industry. It has a larger percentage of its 831 square miles under cultivation than any county in Oregon. The town of Wasco was named for the Indian Tribe. The town was originally designated the county seat of Sherman County by the Legislative Assembly, although the selection was contested between Wasco and Moro. Moro benefited from the addition to the southern part of the county of a portion of Wasco County in 1891 and was the eventual winner of a series of elections to select a county seat. Wasco, population 380, is located close to the route of the Oregon Trail just north of town, and is named for Sherman County's parent county, Wasco. The first post office in the area was Spanish Hollow, established in 1870 by Jesse Eaton, postmaster. The name was changed to Wasco in 1882, and the town incorporated in 1898.
