Transportation

in the Mid Columbia River Gorge area

The Mid Columbia is a hub for both transcontinental and border-to-border highways. There is a constant flow of traffic in the area, with products being shipped by a combination of small airports, rail, river barge, as well as interstate and highway trucking.

Rural parts of the states have always had a challenge when seeking to meet the transportation needs of the local population. Long distances between towns and an economic base that reflects the size of the population have made it difficult for rural communities to fund mass transit. Many lower income citizens or senior citizens find themselves totally dependant on others when they are no longer able to access personal automobile transportation. As a visitor from Russia noted to me, "This is not a pedestrian friendly country."

Communities in the Mid Columbia have worked together to meet this challenge by creating a network of transportation to meet the needs of the local citizens.
