How to Keep Others From Knowing You Were Here
Warning!
If you think someone is trying to monitor your computer activity
and wants to keep you from getting help or information, read the
following:
WARNING: If your abuser is a sophisticated computer user and
determined to stalk your activity on the computer, the following
steps may not be enough to completely remove the traces of your
computer activity.
If you want to use the computer safely
to access information on Domestic Violence or Stalking, use a computer
your abuser doesn't have access to. Borrow a friend's computer,
or your county library may have computers with internet access for
you to use for free.
Computer activity can be tracked through COOKIES, HISTORY FILES,
and TEMP FILES. You can usually delete these files, but the act
of deleting them all may alert your abuser to the fact that you
were trying to cover your tracks. Many web sites require a "cookie"
to access their services. If your abuser has memberships in porno
sites, on-line dating sites, news sites, or other password protected
sites like Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., removing the cookies will alert
your abuser to that fact because those cookies will disappear. There
is also a lot of new "spyware" advertised for computer
stalkers. You are the only one who can determine if your abuser
has the skills to track your computer use through these files and
whether removing them might be unsafe.
If you don't think it's safe to remove these files, then try surfing
on another 10-20 "safe" webpages after you are done here.
If you bury your activity far enough in the history file your abuser
may not notice it, depending on how far back your history logs go.
Get familiar with your computer settings (you can usually find them
in your browser. Look for "options" on the browser for
Windows Explorer.)
Sometimes an old-fashioned telephone is the best way to get information.
The agencies listed at the bottom of this page will be able to provide
you with more information about Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
After you have read these instructions and understand what to
do, please close your internet browser. Restart your browser and
then follow the instructions to clear your cache making sure that
you are not currently on the A2Zgorge.info Domestic Violence pages
of this website.
Question:
How
can I clear my browser's history file, temp files, and cookies?
Answer:
1. Select "Internet Options" under the "View"
or "Tools" option (depending on the version you are running)
on the toolbar.
2. Under the "General" folder under "Internet Options",
there is a section called "History". Change the "Days
to keep pages in History:" to 0 and click the "Clear History"
button.
3. Click "Apply" at the bottom of the "Internet Options"
box, then click "OK"
4. To double check that everything is cleared, click the "History"
button on the web browser toolbar - it should be empty. Also, click
the arrow on the right of the URL Address box - it should be empty
as well.
