Gilliam County
Olex is a small community located on the John Day Highway 19, about 15 miles south of Arlington, Oregon. Agriculture is the primary economic base of the community, particularly wheat. It is situated on Rock Creek.
When this post office was established it was intended to honor one Alex Smith, a local resident, but the enthusiasm of the petition writer was better than his handwriting, and the authorities at Washington misread Alex into Olex, and so it has been for many decades. The office was established Oct. 27, 1874, with James H. Butler first postmaster. -- Source: Oregon Geographic Names, Sixth Edition, 1992, Lewis L.
