Multnomah County
The Columbia Gorge National Scenic area consists of more than just jaw-dropping scenery. You will also find some tiny communities nestled in the embrace of the Columbia Gorge Cascade Mountains. The communities of Corbett, Bridal Veil, Warrendale, and Dodson are located along what is known as "the Old Highway," the Historic Columbia River Highway which runs mostly parallel with I-84 on the south shore of the Columbia River, between Cascade Locks and Troutdale.

From west to east, these communities are:
Corbett - This community on the Historic Columbia River Highway between the Sandy River and Crown Point was named for Senator Henry Winslow Corbett, one of Oregon's prominent pioneer citizens, for many years a resident of Portland. Mr. Corbett owned a farm nearby. For a concise biography of Mr. Corbett, see Cary's History of Oregon, v. 2, p. 305. Scott's History of the Oregon Country has biographical information about Senator Corbett in V.1, pp. 108 and 280, and Harvey W. Scott's tribute, v.5, p. 183. For many years there was a station named Corbett on the Union Pacific Railroad at the base of the bluff below the community. The station is gone but there is a small commercial cluster where a road leaves I-84 and climbs the hill to connect to the historic highway. Corbett post office was established Dec. 20, 1895, with William H.H. Reed first postmaster.
Bridal
Veil - The romantically inclined never fail to name at least one important
waterfall in a state Bridal Veil. The falls in Oregon bearing this name are
quite attractive during the higher stages of water, even though they are to
a certain extent obscured by the bridge of the Historic Columbia River Highway.
They have borne this name since pioneer days. There is a community nearby named
Bridal Veil. The creek forming the falls is also known as Bridal Veil Creek.
It heads on Larch Mountain.
Bridal Veil Lodge is a cozy little Bed and Breakfast situated on the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway in the midst of the scenic Columbia Gorge Waterfall area. Within this 22 mile stretch, you can view some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the area, including the second-highest continually running waterfall in the country, Multnomah Falls. Hiking trails are plentiful in the gorge, and Bridal Veil Lodge Bed and Breakfast is a perfectly positioned inn for overnight accommodations.
Bridal Veil still has a post office that provides service for the local area.
Warrendale
was a post office in eastern Multnomah Cou7nhty serving the territory west of
Bnneville. Warrendale was named for Framk M. Warren, Sr., a pioneer fish packer
of Oregon, and a prominent citizen of Portland. He was drowned in the wreck
of the Titanic in April 1912.
Dodson is a railroad station just west of Warrendale. The name of the station comes from Ira Dodson, an early settler in that part of the county. Dodson station has been moved several times and was once near the present location of Warrendale.
The
area between Bridal Veil and Warrendale was subject to some intense landscaping
during the winter of 1996-97. The weather that year provided some high intensity
winds, gusting to over 100mph on the Oregon Coast, and heavy rains to the Columbia
River Gorge. Many rivers in the area overflowed their banks, and the ground
became so saturated with rain that it was described as having the consistency
of chocolate pudding. Heavy rainfall prompted a massive landslide that buried
this house up to the roof in massive boulders. The waters formed a new creek
bed that washed rocks and debris down onto I-84, resulting in temporary closure
of this major traffic route through the gorge.
There are several campsites and hiking trails in the area.
