Biggs
is located at the intersection of Highway 97 and Interstate 84, just south of
the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge across the Columbia River.
Biggs is located 9.6 miles from the City of Wasco in Sherman County. Biggs is a tiny community with several businesses that provide complete services for busy travelers on Interstate 84, including: a motel, gas station, mini-mart, truck stop and restaurant.
The
community overlooks the Columbia River, and provides a point of connection to
the railway and river for the local agricultural industry. Mid Columbia Producers
operates the grain elevators.
The City of Wasco is the official U.S. Postal Designation for all mail.
Travelers headed for central Washington often pass through Bigg's Junction. To the north, the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge crosses the Columbia River and the Highway leads to the reknowned Maryhill Museum and Stonehenge Monument, as well as winding its way up the Klickitat mountains to Goldendale and eventually Yakima and Ellensburg. Highway 97 leading south leads to the town of Wasco, and the ghost town of Shaniko, eventually passing through Condon.
History
Biggs is a station on the Union Pacific Railroad mail line at what was the junction with the now abandoned branch south into Sherman County. It was named for a nearby landowner, W.H. Biggs, who was born in Belmont County, Ohio, May 12, 1831 and who came to Sherman County in 1880. The small local community is known as Biggs Junction because this is where US-97, running north and south, makes an important intersection with I-84. The community was formerly known as Spanish Hollow. This is the hollow that opens upon the Columbia River at Biggs. It is said to have received its name because a Spanish ox died in the canyon during the days of the immigrations. The name Spanish Gulch for this hollow is incorrect. -- Source: Oregon Geographic Names, Sixth Edition, 1992, Lewis L. McArthur, Oregon Historical Society Press, ISBN O-87595-237-2.
