hilltop. The observatory houses one of the nation's largest public telescopes

dancer Loie Fuller. Also includes chess set exhibit, Native American artifacts
and basketry, and more. Dedicated by Queen Marie of Romaria in 1926, the museum
opened in 1940. The castle-like museum overlooks the Columbia River Gorge on
26 park-like acres. European and American paintings are complemented by a collection
of Auguste Rodin sculptures an d watercolors, 19th-century French art glass
and 18th-century Russian icons. Other highlights include Hill photographs and
memorabilia, American Indian basketry and artifacts, the Theatre de la Mode
French mannequin gallery and personal items and royal furnishings donated by
Queen Marie. A visable storage gallery allows visitors a glimpse of the museum's
weapons collection, Hill's death mask and busts of famous figures throughout
history. Also visit the museum gift shop and cafe.

In 1888, twenty-nine year old Dartmouth graduate Winthrop Bartlett Presby came
to Goldendale and soon after began the study of law under Judge Ralph "Oregon"
Dunbar. During this time he assisted with the drafting of the Washington State
Constitution. In his lifetime, Presby was mayor of Goldendale, a U.S. Land Commissioner
and a member of the Washington State Senate. In 1902, he contracted with Pierce
Bros. carpenters to build the house at an estimated cost of $8000. The house
boasts twenty rooms on three floors. The main floor features four fireplaces
with ornately carved wood mantels, inlaid with ceramic tile. Today, it is the
home of the Klickitat County Historical Museum. The museum features household
items including a large coffee mill collection. There is also a research library
and gift shop. Home of the Klickitat Historical Society. Built in 1902 by W.B.
Bresby, the furnishings and displays are donated by pioneer families of the
area. Museum Highlights include homestead cabin, coffee grinder collection,
and turn of the century kitchen and parlor. References include indexed photo
collection, cemetery records of the county, school yearbooks, and many family
histories. Gift shop features books of local history, our afghan, and decorative
items for gifting.

Stonehenge is located on a cliff overlooking the Columbia River near the Maryhill
Museum of Art. It is the most accurate actual-size replica of the original Stonehenge
in the United States. It was built as a memorial to the men of Klickitat County
killed in World War I. Stonehenge was the first memorial to be built to honor
servicemen who had died in WW I, and dedicated in July, 1918.
